Spring Into Action
March 29, 2008
Spring is much like our conception of New Year’s Day. New Year’s day is the day for new resolutions; when we look inward and think of all the new goals we want to accomplish in the coming year. With the coming of spring, we again think of new goals with the difference being we look outward at our surroundings. Home care, home improvement and landscaping are where we put our thoughts and actions.
Spring into action, roll up your sleeves and start cleaning! Many cities are hosting waste disposal events across the nation. So, gather up those no longer used cleaning and gardening supplies, old paint, dead batteries and discarded tires and the like. Don’t forget to include your e-waste such as old televisions, computers, and cameras. These items can be recycled or disposed of in a manner safe to our environment.
Here are some safety reminders for disposing of waste products.
Ø Don’t mix chemicals – results can be disastrous
Ø Keep cleaning supplies in their original containers – if they are leaking place them in a second container. If the label is missing write on the bottle what is contained within.
Ø Sort paint by type ( oil-base, water-based, latex)
Ø Do not transport liquid waste in the passenger section of your vehicle.
You can find out what your city is doing by going to their website, contacting your waste management company or calling your city hall. For the citizens of Edmond, the city will be hosing a Hazardous Household Waste Collection Event on Saturday, April 12 at the UCO campus, just east of the Liberal Arts building on Bauman St.. If you have questions on what will be accepted, you can call 216-7770. The event is free to all residents of Edmond; but be sure to bring a utility bill with you to verify residency.
